How GPA and CGPA are calculated
GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 4) ÷ 7 = 3.43. CGPA uses the same idea across semesters: multiply each semester's GPA by that semester's credit hours, add them up and divide by the total credit hours.
| Grade | Grade points (4.0 scale) |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply the grade points of each course by its credit hours, add those results together, and divide by the total credit hours. For example, A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
How do I calculate my CGPA?
CGPA is the same calculation across all your semesters: multiply each semester's GPA by that semester's credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. Use the "CGPA" tab and add one row per semester.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) covers a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers every semester completed so far.
Which grading scale do Pakistani universities use?
Most universities follow the 4.0 scale used by the Higher Education Commission, where A is 4.0 and F is 0. The exact grade points for A-, B+ and so on can differ slightly between universities, so you can change the points in the table of this calculator to match your own university.
Does a failed course count in my GPA?
Yes. A failed course (F, 0 points) counts in the credit hours and lowers the average. If your university replaces the F after a repeat, remove the old row and add the repeated course instead.
Is this the official result?
No. The calculator is for guidance. Your university's own result and transcript always decide your official GPA and CGPA.
