How Income Tax Is Calculated

Salary tax in Pakistan is progressive: only the part of your income that falls inside a slab is taxed at that slab's rate. Each slab above the tax-free limit adds a fixed amount of tax for the income below it, plus the slab's percentage on the rest.

Example: a monthly salary of Rs 150,000 is Rs 1,800,000 a year. That falls in the slab Rs 1,200,001 – Rs 2,200,000, so the yearly tax is Rs 6,000 + 11% of Rs 600,000 = Rs 72,000, or Rs 6,000 a month.

Your employer estimates your annual taxable salary, works out the yearly tax with these slabs and deducts it from your pay in equal monthly instalments. If your salary changes during the year, the monthly deduction is adjusted for the months that remain.
